In this presentation from the 2023 Typefi User Conference, Justin North and Clayton George of IGI Global discuss the various phases of the organisation’s relationship with Typefi, the challenges they overcame, and the massive benefits that Typefi has provided to the organisation.
IGI Global is a mid-size publisher producing research-based academic books and journals for multiple print and digital formats.
IGI Global initially began using Typefi 4 back in 2008 along with a CMS and Inera eXtyles. The initial implementation brought some big benefits, but the CMS that was chosen brought constant challenges. As a result, IGI didn’t really gain much output from this initial project.
Over the next several years, IGI worked constantly to improve the workflow. They made great strides by creating their own proprietary management system and coming up with new ways to automate parts of the process in-house. However, after almost 15 years of using Typefi 4 (along with Adobe CS4), they realised it was time to upgrade.
At the time of this presentation, IGI was actively in the process of upgrading to Typefi 8. With Typefi 8, everything that the team at IGI was previously doing in-house can now be done out of the box using Typefi.
EPUB creation and TOCs can be done automatically using Typefi 8. Fully typeset PDF documents can be produced automatically out of Typefi as well as fully rendered and editable InDesign documents for those PDFs. The workflow also now has a true single source, with Typefi being the source for all published outputs.
The results of all this time spent with Typefi speak volumes. In 2008, when IGI first started using Typefi, the organisation produced 145 books. Looking ahead, IGI predicts that with all the recent workflow upgrades, they will be able to produce 850 books in 2025.
