Maroochydore, AUSTRALIA – Typefi Systems Pty Ltd, a global leader in automated publishing software for long documents, has announced the immediate availability of Typefi Orion™, a Microsoft Word®-based XML editorial software for scholarly publishers which is a replacement for Inera eXtyles®.

“Typefi has many clients that use eXtyles, so we knew that eXtyles’s upcoming end-of-life in August 2026 would create significant challenges for scholarly publishers,” said Caleb Clauset, VP Product and New Markets at Typefi. “In response, we began developing Typefi Orion as a drop-in replacement.”

Typefi Orion offers a familiar user experience and feature set that matches the needs of current eXtyles users, along with some major advantages:

  • Backwards Compatibility: You can import your existing settings and rules from eXtyles into Typefi Orion, including article types, metadata, paragraph styles, cleanup, citation settings, and more.
  • Modern Architecture: eXtyles is over 20 years old, and so are its core underlying technologies. Typefi Orion is built on the latest technologies like XSLT and Java, which results in significantly faster processing times and sets the stage for future improvements and new features beyond what eXtyles could do.
  • Change Tracking: Typefi Orion supports Microsoft Word’s native Change Tracking and Comments throughout the workflow.
  • Customisation: Typefi Orion can be customised to fit your specific editorial requirements, including house style, custom reference styles, and unique XML exports. You can also modify document metadata, add new workflows, and edit styles yourself via the Typefi Orion Compass dashboard, then push changes to all users simultaneously.
  • Automated Editing: SmartReplace in Typefi Orion is a direct replacement for Auto-Redact in eXtyles, and you can import your existing Auto-Redact dictionaries into Typefi Orion. SmartReplace also supports Word’s native Change Tracking, so you can see every automated change along with the specific rule that made the change.
  • Reference Processing: Inera Edifix® is included with every Typefi Orion subscription at no extra cost, which enables automated reference structuring to your house style, as well as validation and linking via Crossref™ and PubMed®.

Matching the features of eXtyles was the primary goal for the initial release of Typefi Orion, but the Typefi team also aimed to improve upon the eXtyles workflow as much as possible. The team held monthly meetings with eXtyles users over the 16-month development cycle to gain deeper insights into the existing user experience.

“Talking to current eXtyles users proved absolutely invaluable during the development of Typefi Orion,” said Guy van der Kolk, Product Manager at Typefi. “These conversations helped us understand which features of the software were most important, revealed where users were frustrated, and guided us in improving the overall user experience.”

Typefi Orion is available now as an annual subscription in both cloud-based and on-premises configurations. The software is priced based on a range of factors, including your required features and number of seats.
