A new EPUB workflow

Typefi’s Professional Services team is always looking for ways to help customers DO MORE.

In this four-minute Lightning Session from the 2019 Typefi User Conference, Solutions Consultant Marie Gollentz demonstrates a new EPUB workflow that allows users to create both PDF and EPUB from a single InDesign template.

For those of you who are not interested in EPUB, you have three minutes to guess where I'm from. So, the workflow we are actually talking about is how we can here, for example, from a CXML or Word document, convert our content to CXML and then fit that content in InDesign to create a EPUB and PDF output. So, the traditional approach is to have our content, whatever is your input, we will start here from CXML. And we would have to go from CXML to InDesign with one InDesign template to produce a PDF. And then we would have to do through another workflow to produce another InDesign document to produce EPUB. So, that means that what you needed in that traditional approach was to create an InDesign template for PDF, configure a PDF workflow, create one InDesign template for EPUB, configure an EPUB workflow. And what you couldn't do then was to reuse your manually modified InDesign files. So, in this new approach, we're starting with CXML. We're creating an InDesign document that we export to PDF and we are repurposing the InDesign document to give it the markup needed for EPUB and we export then that second InDesign file to EPUB. So, what you need now is actually one InDesign template for print with some EPUB-specific markup, the Prepare for EPUB script which allows you to go from one InDesign document to the next and only one workflow. So, you won't blame me for not using the connection. I've recorded that earlier. So, I'm running here the workflow to create at once both a PDF and EPUB. So, as you can see here, I have two InDesign documents. One for EPUB, one for PDF and I have both outputs, EPUB and PDF here. And again I'm opening quickly my EPUB output. And right here my PDF output. So, I guess what I really wanted to say today is that Typefi has allowed you to produce PDF for almost 15 years and EPUBs for over a decade. But even if we have solutions that already work, we always try to find ways to make them better. In this example, Eric had this idea and Peter made it possible with a script, so whether you're interested in EPUB or any other solution, just let us know how we can help you DO MORE. "}
