Typefi Orion: The future of XML authoring and editorial

Typefi is leveraging our long partnership with Inera, input from our existing clients that use eXtyles, and 20+ years of experience developing Word-to-XML solutions to launch a next-generation suite of XML authoring and editorial tools called Typefi Orion.

Orion matches the capabilities of eXtyles and improves in several important areas, and it’s on track for launch by the end of 2025.

We’ll post updates here as new features are completed. Check out the videos below to see our progress and the latest developments.

Roundtable discussion

AUGUST 2025

Watch as Guy van der Kolk, Typefi Product Manager, Robin Dunford, Typefi Product Manager, and Caleb Clauset, Typefi VP Product, discuss the updated Typefi Orion roadmap and show a demo of recently completed features like author processing. The team also shows off some recent updates to the Typefi Orion plug-in for Microsoft Word. This session also included a group discussion with the audience, but that portion was removed from this video to protect the privacy of those who attended. If you’d like to see the discussion, please email marketing@typefi.com.

Mid-year progress update

JUNE 2025

The Typefi team had a busy start to the year! We hit the road in May with several in-person events and showed an end-to-end preview of Orion. The conversations we had and the feedback we received are invaluable as we work to deliver Orion by year-end, eight months before eXtyles sunsets. In this short recap, Typefi VP Product, Caleb Clauset, talks about our vision for Orion, our progress up to this point, and the busy event season we just wrapped up. We still have a lot to do, but more features are nearly complete! Make sure you sign up for the Orion community to receive regular updates.

Typefi Orion preview

MAY 2025

Typefi VP Product, Caleb Clauset, demonstrates an end-to-end workflow using Orion in this preview. First, Caleb walks through Orion’s Microsoft Word Add-in (which looks and feels very similar to eXtyles). Then, he dives into key features including document cleanup and preparation, automated editing, styling, reference correction with Edifix, and finally, seamless export to JATS XML. Caleb also answers a slew of questions from the audience on topics like customisation, auto-redact, reference processing, and licensing.

Roundtable discussion

MARCH 2025

Watch as Guy van der Kolk, Typefi Product Manager, and Caleb Clauset, Typefi VP Product, discuss the Typefi Orion roadmap and development timetable, introduce the Typefi Orion team, and compare Orion versus eXtyles. This session also included a group discussion with the audience, but that portion was removed from this video to protect the privacy of those who attended. Style Groups and Document Info

FEBRUARY 2025

It’s easy to modify all aspects of Style Groups and Document Info (metadata) from Orion’s server interface. You can quickly add new styles or data fields, configure them, and change order with a simple drag-and-drop, then instantly push those changes to every user in your organisation at the same time. This significantly reduces the time and effort required to deploy and configure Orion.

Document processing with tracked changes

DECEMBER 2024

Watch as Guy van der Kolk, Typefi Product Manager, demonstrates Orion’s Auto-Replace feature. It’s similar to the Auto-Redact feature in eXtyles, but with a twist! Auto-Replace sends the document to our cloud-based server, where we use XSLT to preserve tracked changes. Once Auto-Replace is complete, the document refreshes and you’ll see your redactions clearly marked.
