The challenge is producing more formats, faster. Starting with a manuscript, producing a PDF for print,
a PDF for accessibility, and e-books for iOS, Kindle, and Android.
Here, we are looking at a Microsoft Word document, a monograph that is ready for Typefi automation. The dark green bars are section markers that mark where a chapter begins. Paragraph styles have been consistently applied to all the content.
As we scroll here, we will see a couple of figure elements in lighter green. They include alternative text which we use in the creation of our accessible PDF.
Let’s click Print and watch the magic begin.
We have triggered three parallel workflows. At the top, the larger trim size is for print and accessibility. In the bottom right, the smaller trim size is for print-only. In the bottom left, we have a digital file optimised for iOS, Kindle, and Android.
Let’s take a closer look.
At this trim size the book is around 312 pages long. It contains front matter, back matter, chapters, footnotes, inline images, even a table of contents that is dynamically generated.
All the images are placed automatically based on layout rules the designer sets up using Typefi. Footnotes are being placed on the pages appropriately, and the text around them is adjusted to fit.
Now this is being run in a desktop version of Typefi, in preview mode, so you can see what is happening behind the scenes. The actual process of laying out this book is two to three times faster when it is run on an actual Typefi server.
Now, again, we are creating six simultaneous outputs in less than two minutes from a single source file.
Let’s take a look at our outputs. We have PDFs in two different trim sizes, and an accessible PDF shown here
(on the right) that contains bookmarks, table of content links, hyperlinks, and even alternative text that can be read by a screen reader for the visually impaired. And our three e-books for iOS, Kindle, and Android.
