Typefi FAQ
How can I automate Adobe InDesign?
You can automate Adobe InDesign with GREP, InDesign scripting, and specialised tools like Typefi publishing automation software. GREP and InDesign scripting are the most common methods, but they still need to be applied manually by a designer working in an InDesign file. Typefi publishing automation software can compose entire documents automatically, without any manual work in the InDesign file, and it can produce over 1,000 pages per hour—all that’s required is an InDesign template and structured content.
How can I compose long, complex documents faster?
The fastest way to compose long documents is with a tool like Typefi publishing automation software. Typefi uses Adobe InDesign Server as the layout engine, so it can handle complex elements like tables (even across multiple pages), footnotes and endnotes, mathematical notation, multi-level lists, and more. Scientific publisher IGI Global produces complex books over 900 pages long using Typefi, and The Federation Press uses Typefi to compose textbooks over 1,000 pages long.
How can I automate accessible publishing?
Typefi publishing automation software can produce accessible documents automatically using Adobe InDesign, in formats including PDF/UA, HTML, EPUB, and DAISY. During composition, Typefi automatically inserts accessible elements including alt text, semantic structure, reading order, language tagging, table of contents, hyperlinks, and metadata, with minimal manual work needed in order to fully mark up tables for accessibility.
How can I automate multilingual publishing?
Typefi publishing automation software can compose documents automatically in over 90 languages including Western European, Cyrillic, Middle Eastern, Indic, CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean), and more. Typefi supports the full Unicode character set and automatically handles reformatting and resizing of translated text, but Typefi doesn’t do the translation: you have to supply the multilingual content. Hachette Antoine uses Typefi to publish textbooks, fiction, and poetry in Arabic, French, and English; the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) uses Typefi to publish its reports in English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, and Arabic.
How does Typefi work?
Typefi needs just two things to publish documents automatically: structured content and an InDesign template. Structured content could be a Microsoft Word file with styles applied, XML, or HTML—as long as there is some markup to identify the parts of the content (heading, body text, caption, etc.), the content should work with Typefi. An InDesign template for Typefi is just an InDesign file—the only unique piece is the Typefi Designer plug-in for InDesign, which enables you to tag frames to match the markup in your content so the software knows where everything should go.
How do I create an InDesign template for Typefi?
An InDesign template for Typefi is built using Parent Pages. The Parent Pages cover all the various page types in the document (cover, chapter start, body, etc.) and include placeholder text frames and all the styling information like brand colours and fonts. The template also contains the reusable design objects (like InDesign library items) needed to achieve your design, tagged with Typefi markup to identify them.
How do I prepare my content for Typefi automation?
You must apply some basic structure to your content in order to use it with Typefi publishing automation software. The easiest method for most Typefi clients is Microsoft Word, but you can use XML or HTML too. Using Typefi Writer, a Microsoft Word Add-in, you can apply paragraph and character styles to your content (so Typefi knows which styles to use in InDesign), specify which InDesign Parent Pages to use for specific content, and tag content to be placed in design objects like boxes or sidebars.
Does Typefi use AI?
No, Typefi doesn’t use any artificial intelligence. Everything Typefi does is rule-based, and the rules are defined by you, the user. For example, you can set rules to specify that images should always be placed in the top half of the page, and define paragraph rules to avoid things like short last lines, widows, and orphans. The possibilities are nearly endless, and it’s always in your control—the software will never hallucinate or do things outside of your instructions.
Is Typefi cloud-based or on-premises?
Typefi is available in both cloud-based and on-premises configurations. Typefi Cloud Teams is available with tiered page volume limits ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 pages per month, while Typefi Cloud Enterprise has no monthly volume limit. Typefi Workgroup is an on-premises solution with no monthly volume limit and no network connection required.
Does Typefi work on Mac?
Yes, Typefi Cloud works on Mac, as does the Typefi Designer plug-in for InDesign. Typefi Writer (Microsoft Word add-in) and Typefi Workgroup (on-premises installation) don’t support macOS and can only be used on Windows.
Which operating systems does Typefi support?
Typefi Cloud works with any operating system, including Windows and macOS, as it’s fully hosted online. Typefi Workgroup and Typefi Writer don’t support macOS. Typefi Workgroup requires Windows Server 2025 or Windows Server 2022; Typefi Writer requires Microsoft Windows 11 or Windows 10.
Which InDesign versions does Typefi support?
Typefi supports Adobe InDesign on a rolling, three-major-version schedule. The current version of Typefi Server supports Adobe InDesign 2026 (v21.3 or later), InDesign 2025 (v20 or later), and InDesign 2024 (v19.0.1 or later).
How much does Typefi cost?
Typefi starts at US$999 per month for a shared Typefi Cloud Teams server with 2 users and a 1,000 page-per-month volume limit—that works out to about US$1 per page (cost per page decreases at higher page limits). Typefi Cloud Enterprise and Typefi Workgroup offer dedicated servers with no monthly limits, and are designed for large organisations with high publishing volumes.
