Balisage is The Markup Conference, devoted to all things descriptive markup. It’s a totally virtual event, happening from 3–7 August 2026, and it covers all areas of markup, including XML, XSLT, XSpec, SGML, XPath, XQuery, OOXML, EPUB, SVG, and a whole lot more.
Typefi staff have attended and presented at this conference for many years. We’re especially sad that this is the final year, but we’re honoured to be part of it! And we’re really going to be part of it—Typefi is a Silver sponsor, and we have three presentations on the schedule covering multiple aspects of Typefi Orion.

This session will feature a technical paper written by Gayanthika Udeshani, Associate Architect at Typefi. The paper focuses on how Gayanthika and the engineering team built out the SmartReplace feature in Typefi Orion to support change tracking in Microsoft Word, a highly complex challenge. You’ll get an inside, technical look at the track changes architecture of Orion SmartReplace and learn how the magic happens behind the scenes.
Typefi Orion: The future of JATS, BITS, and STS editorial tools

In this session, Guy van der Kolk and Lukas Kaefer from Typefi will tell the story of Typefi Orion, our cutting-edge XML editorial software for Microsoft Word. They’ll discuss the background of the project, the intense discovery and development processes, and the lessons learned along the way. Then, they’ll dive into the technical details and show a demo of Orion in action.
Open Mic: Building Typefi Orion in the Open

Open Mic sessions at Balisage cover a variety of topics, and each presenter gets from 2–10 minutes to speak. During Friday’s Open Mic session, Caleb Clauset from Typefi will briefly discuss the collaborative development process used to build Typefi Orion. He’ll talk about the monthly roundtable discussions and 1:1 sessions we held with scholarly editors and eXtyles users, and explain how we structured these sessions to guide our development. He’ll also share some of the insights we gained from these meetings.
